Professional Development Modules
In addition to running a successful local program for twelve years, the Parent/Teacher Home Visit Project provides training and ongoing consultation to launch and sustain successful home visit efforts in communities outside of Sacramento in partnership with our national colleagues from around the country.
Here are the recommended training sessions:
I. Home Visits Bridge, Bond and Build Connections Between Families and Schools
This session is designed for k-12 schools and districts new to strategic and organized home visit efforts. This interactive session- led by a team of parents and teachers that are directly involved in the work- introduces the research, logistics, step by step guide, practice and skills of building effective relationships between families and teachers as co-educators of a child. It also addresses the barriers to communication and visits including language and cultural barriers, assumptions and fears about personal safety, mandated reporting concerns, etc. At the end of the session, staff can make an informed choice about participation in the program.
II. Home Visits, Understanding Culture and Closing the Achievement Gap
This session is designed for staff conducting home visits with students and families. This session, led by diverse and experienced parents and teachers in the project, leads staff through a three hour session exploring how to take the next step- after a home visit- to bring the increased knowledge of a family’s culture back into the school and classroom experience to better individualize instruction for each student.
III. Building Regional Home Visit Project Training Teams
This interactive training session is led by experienced home visiting trainers and is designed to fully prepare selected parents and teachers to become regional trainers for other colleagues and school community members who would like to launch home visit efforts in their areas using this proven model. The session requires six hours of training time and participants will receive certificates as regional trainers under this model.
